Mahadev Shiva : as an Ecologist of the Central Himalayas

According to the Kailash Sanhita of Shiva Purana, Ishana was born from Shiva, and five Mithuns/elements: sky, air, fire, water, and earth emerged from Ishana. These five elements are known as Panch Mahabhutas, of which this universe and every living or non-living thing are created. Thus, Shiva is the creator of this entire universe.

The central Himalayan region of India, well-equipped in the lap of nature, has been the birthplace and the workplace of divine powers since immemorial. Adorned with the natural beauty of the Himalayas, irrigated by innumerable pure streams, enriched with life-giving herbs, the infinite peace, and the adobe of Kailashpati Shiva and Adishakti Parvati on this holy land gives it spiritual supremacy. In search of God-realization and ultimate happiness and peace, sages-saints and ascetics have given this land religious and spiritual pride by making their place of worship. The Dudhatoli landscape in the central Himalaya, known as the Pamir of Uttarakhand, is the best example of bio-ecology. It would be more appropriate to call the Dudhatoli mountain range a zone of abundant ecological diversity than the Pamir. The Binsar Mahadev temple here seems to connect the bio-ecology of the region with Mahadev Shiva’s love for nature. Mahadev of Dudhatoli is the great ecologist in the demesne.

In 2016, from 3rd-7th January, the 103rd Indian Science Congress was held in Karnataka at the University of Mysore— the chairman of MP PURC, AK. Pandey presented a paper entitled Lord Shiva as a great environmentalist in the World. In this paper, he reveals Shiva as the most eco-friendly person to have incarnated on earth. His entire personality displays this fact. The nature of Shiva and the methods of His worship described in ancient texts encourage environmental protection and the promotion of biodiversity.

Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiva is the best source of pure water for all living beings in many forms as drinking, irrigation, generating hydraulic power, etc. Parvat Putri, Parvati is the power of Shiva in the configuration of Ardhangini. Ganga, the national river of India, descends on the terra and plays with Shiva’s hair. A crescent moon inwrought on the head of Shiva provides scotopic vision and serenity to the planet. Rudraksha and snake necklaces adorned on Neelkanth. Ox riding by Shiva, lion, elephant, and horse riding by Durga ei. Parvati, Moosak/Rat riding by Ganesha, and Mayoor/Peacock riding by Kartikeya in the form of a vehicle animal riding by the entire Shiva family teach the world about wildlife sustentation. He is known as the guardian of animals, as the holy Hindu shrine Pashupatinath is located in Nepal.

The inclusion of flora such as Bhang (Cannabis Sativa), Dhatura (Datura stramonium), Bilwa (Aegle marmelos), Badari (Zizyphus mauritiana), Chandan (Santalum album), Arka (Calotropis gigantea), Doorva (Cynodon Dactylon), and Kesar (Crocus sativus) in his favourite items is an eye-opening prototype of plant conservation. These compounds are also life-giving medicines for the human being. The natural antiviral compounds in Bhang, Dhatura, Bilwa, Badri, Madara, and Madhu offered to Shiva are also conducive to beaucoup diseases along with Covid-19.  Before the emergence of modern medical science, herbs were the only source to treat incurable diseases.

The accommodation of Lord Rudra in the configuration of Binsar Mahadev at this zone amplifies its spiritual glory at that of its ecological magnitude. Shiva is the symbol of the ecosystem of the biosphere. The pyre ash on the body of Shiva renders the estrum to concede inanimation facilely. Whether Shiva’s love for flora and fauna creates a sense of entity, on the other side, the tiger’s blister and pyre ash draped over the body symbolizes mortality. Thus, Shiva concatenates human beings to become ecologically susceptive. Shiva’s occurrence in the Dudhatoli mountain range and abundance of biodiversity personify Shiva as an ecologist.
